Pt. 2

He blinked, looking down at the creature before him, and than casted a confused look to his companion. The Boomer shrugged with a look just as baffled as his own. He sighed, and looked back down at the boy before him.

He was twitching his ears in confusion, and he was chewing on his finger. He waved his hand in front of the boy's face; he was more than sure he couldn't see with the bandages. But the Hunter's ears shot up straight and he followed the Smoker's hand.

He pulled away, fearful that the Hunter would bite it clean off if he was given the chance. The ears on his head fell back, and he walked away, perching himself on the window seal.

Harry and Leonard exchanged glances again, and soon both their gazes fell onto the back of the Hunter.

From his perch, he was looking outside onto the street. He was glancing side to side, searching for something.

Harry walked up and leaned his arm on the window seal.

"Searching for the other Hunters?"

Drake jumped and looked up at Harry. The side of his mouth twitched, and he turned his head to face outside again. He nodded.

"From the look of it, they didn't want much to do with you," Harry said bluntly, and Drake seemed to sink into himself. Leonard had appeared behind him, and he punched his shoulder. Harry turned, glaring at him, with his hands up in a 'what?!' gesture.

"Be nice, ya idiot! He's gotta be just'a kid," Leo scolded in whisper, and Harry frowned. He looked back at the boy, and his frown deepened.

Drake was slumped by the window seal, and his ears were sagging. His shoulders seemed to be a shaking a little, and Harry sighed, rubbing his eyes. He made the kid cry.

Leo sighed, giving Harry a disappointed look, and went over to the boy. He kneeled next to him, whispered a few things to the kid, and he perked up almost immediately, causing Harry's eyebrows to shoot up.

The little Hunter jumped from his perch and came at Harry, tackling him, and pinned him on the ground in a tight hug. Harry tried to pry the boy off of him, and then glared up at the laughing Boomer standing over him.

"The hell did you tell?"

"That ya didn' mean what ya said, and that ya liked him."

The Boomer smirked and the Smoker frowned. He looked down at the small Hunter that was rubbing his head against his chest. He was very, well, affectionate, for a Hunter. He patted his head, and managed to work his arms off. He sat up, and looked to his side, where Drake was sitting.

His tail was up, swaying a bit, and his ears were relaxed, twitching occasionally from little sounds he could hear. He had a small grin showing under his bandages.

Harry sighed, rubbing his neck, nervous of what he could say or ask the boy. He was never one to get along with 'the younger people'; all he used to do was wave and walk by. For some strange and odd reason, people used to know who he was, even though he never talked to anyone.

Now he was practically being forced into talking to someone he knew could literally rip his eyes out with no problem at all.

He swallowed the lump in his throat and looked at the small boy. "So, um, Drake, right?" he asked, and the Hunter nodded, his ears up in excitement that he was getting attention. Harry glanced around the room, as if searching for the words to say within the shadows. He could only come up with one question.

"Drake, why were those Hunter surrounding you like that?"

The smile immediately left the boy's face and he seemed to get smaller. He jumped onto the couch and brought his knees to his chest, burying his face against them.

"They think I'm too small and weak. They wanted to get rid of me. My brother…" he trailed off, and Harry wondered if the boy could look any sadder than he did right now.

"Your brother?" he coaxed, sitting next to him, "you have a brother? Is he a Hunter?"

The boy simply nodded, never removing his face from his knees.

"He didn't wanna defend me. He just stood there while they were gonna get me…"

Harry glanced at Leo, who simply shook his head. That was something horrible that no one should experience. Especially coming from their own brother. But Harry wasn't sure how to comfort the boy. He didn't know what to say or what to do. He'd never been in a situation like this before.

Leonard must have picked up on his awkward feeling because he walked up and patted the boy's head.

"Maybe your brother is tryin' ta find ya. Ta fix what he did wrong, and help ya." He had no idea what to tell the boy, so he pulled together whatever he could. He let go of his held breath when the boy had a weak smile on his face.

"Yeah, maybe he is," Harry tried to add in, "so try not to worry. You can stay with us till we find him or he finds us."

'Stay with us!?' he thought, 'what on earth am I thinking!?'

But before he could take it back, there were arms wrapped tight around his neck. Drake had his cold cheek pressed against his own, and a grin smeared across his face.

"Thank you," he squeaked, and went about searching the room.

Harry sat there, dumbfounded. That little Hunter was definitely full of surprises. He and Leonard sat there on the couch, watching the little Hunter as he went about sniffing and going through things. They laughed when he got a box stuck on his head, and were extremely amused at how curious he was. The saying 'Curiosity killed the Cat' was chiming in Harry's mind, but he kept it to himself.

The exploration continued a while longer till Drake appeared from under a table, carrying Harry's book in his teeth. Harry jumped and ran over to the boy, pulling the book from him.

"No, dammit, Drake! Don't mess with this book!"

Drake pulled away like he had been struck by the words and ran over to Leo, hiding behind him.

Harry ignored the glare coming from the Boomer, and wiped the drool off the cover on his shirt. He swore a little under his breath and ran his fingers through the pages, checking if they were all there, making sure not a single one was torn.

"Harry, ya need quit it with that damn book'a yours! Why's it so Goddamn important!?"

"Because," Harry mumbled, clutching the book as he sat in a chair. He placed his arms on the table before him, dropping the book on it.

"Because why?" the Boomer probed. He wasn't going to let this end so quickly. He would usually give up pretty quick to avoid getting into a heated argument the Smoker; sometimes they would get so frustrated it almost came to blows. But this time, he was going to push it.

"Because, Leonard! It's…it's the only shred of humanity I have left…"

He picked up the book, turning it in his hands. "It's been my favorite book of all time. It talks about a boy who is basically alone in the world that seems to be coming to an end. He's alone. But he manages to find a way to save himself in the end of it all, and becomes a person who tries to bring books back to the world. He tries to keep a part of himself alive, while others let it die out…"

Leonard pulled back, finally understanding the man before him. He was Smoker, yes. But part of him was still very much human. As it was for him.

Drake has been sitting there, listening to him speak. He stood, and slowly walked over to Harry. His ears were back, showing his shame for chewing on his book.

"I'm sorry," he squeaked out, and rubbed his nose.

Harry growled, running his hand along his face, and patted the boy's head.

"It's fine," he grumbled, "you didn't do much damage anyway."

Leo threw his hands up, and walked away; this Smoker was never going to change his ways, apparently.

Drake looked at the book in Harry's hands, and his ears twitched with curiosity. Harry looked at the book also, and figured what the little Hunter was going for.

"Wanna read it?" he asked, holding the book out to Drake.

Leo turned, immediately astounded. 'Ok, so maybe this little Hunter could bring some changes from this Smoker?' he thought.

Drake took the book, held it up and opened it…upside down.

He had the ability to see without the use of eyes, due to the mutation caused by the Infection; but what was the use of being able to see a book, if he wasn't able to read it?

He sat on the floor and dropped the book to the side, frustrated. Harry picked up the book and sat next to the boy, a curious look on his face.

"What's wrong? Don't wanna read it?"

"No, I don't," he lied.

Harry watched him for a moment, reading his body language. They boy was irritated, and frustrated, but also sad, and hurting. He figured that there was more to this boy that was a problem for him than just being smaller than the other Hunters.

"Can you read, Drake?" he asked, and the Hunter's ears shot up as he turned his face towards him. As if he was caught biting on Harry's book again, he nodded reluctantly.

Harry smiled a little, and patted the boy on the head. He sat right next to him, and picked up the book. He opened it upright this time, and handed it to Drake.

The boy looked up at him, curiosity spreading through his face.

"I'll teach you how to read, Drake."
